One day, while wandering in search of water, he suddenly spotted a well close to his fields. Overjoyed, the farmer thought his troubles were finally over. The next day, he returned to the well to draw water. As he lowered his bucket, a man appeared and said, “This well is mine. You cannot take water from it. If you want to use it, you must buy the well.”
The farmer paused and thought, If I buy this well, I’ll never face a water shortage again, nor will I have to wander endlessly. After some discussion, they agreed on a price. Though the farmer didn’t have the full amount, he didn’t want to miss this opportunity. He promised to pay the next day and hurried home.
Excited by this chance, the farmer immediately spoke to his family and friends, gathering the required money by the next morning. Now confident, he eagerly waited for dawn, unable to sleep all night. At daybreak, he rushed to the man’s house, paid the agreed sum, and became the owner of the well.
But as the farmer prepared to draw water, the man stopped him again. “Wait! You may have bought the well, but the water inside is still mine.” Heartbroken, the farmer sought justice in King Akbar’s court.
Upon hearing the complaint, King Akbar summoned the man who had sold the well. The man arrived promptly, and the king questioned him, “If you sold the well to this farmer, why are you preventing him from taking water?”
The man replied, “Your Majesty, I sold him the well—not the water inside it.”
King Akbar was puzzled. After much deliberation, he couldn’t resolve the matter and turned to his wisest advisor, Birbal.
Birbal listened carefully to both sides and then said to the man, “So, you sold the well but not the water? Then why is your water still in the farmer’s well? Remove it immediately!”
Realizing his trickery had failed, the man apologized and admitted that the farmer rightfully owned both the well and its water. King Akbar, impressed by Birbal’s wisdom, fined the man for his deceit.
Moral of the Story
Never assume you’re smarter than others. Cheating may seem profitable at first, but there’s always someone wiser who can expose your dishonesty. In the end, deceit only leads to shame and punishment—just as the well-seller learned.

अकबर बीरबल की यह कहानी न केवल मनोरंजक है बल्कि ज्ञान और नैतिकता का पाठ भी पढ़ाती है। कहानी एक चिंतित किसान से शुरू होती है जिसे अपने खेतों की सिंचाई के लिए पानी की सख्त जरूरत थी। कई दिनों तक वह अपने खेत के पास कुआं ढूंढता रहा लेकिन उसे कोई कुआं नहीं मिला।एक दिन, पानी की तलाश में भटकते हुए, उसे अचानक अपने खेतों के पास एक कुआं दिखाई दिया। किसान बहुत खुश हुआ, उसने सोचा कि आखिरकार उसकी परेशानियाँ खत्म हो गईं। अगले दिन, वह पानी भरने के लिए कुएं पर लौटा।
जैसे ही उसने अपनी बाल्टी नीचे की, एक आदमी प्रकट हुआ और बोला, ‘यह कुआं मेरा है। आप इससे पानी नहीं ले सकते। अगर आप इसका इस्तेमाल करना चाहते हैं, तो आपको कुआं खरीदना होगा।’किसान ने रुककर सोचा, अगर मैं यह कुआं खरीद लूंगा, तो मुझे फिर कभी पानी की कमी नहीं होगी, न ही मुझे अंतहीन भटकना पड़ेगा। कुछ देर की बातचीत के बाद, वे एक कीमत पर सहमत हो गए। हालाँकि किसान के पास पूरी रकम नहीं थी, लेकिन वह इस मौके को गंवाना नहीं चाहता था।
उसने अगले दिन पैसे चुकाने का वादा किया और जल्दी से घर चला गया।इस मौके से उत्साहित किसान ने तुरंत अपने परिवार और दोस्तों से बात की और अगली सुबह तक ज़रूरी पैसे जुटा लिए। अब वह आत्मविश्वास से भरा हुआ था और सुबह होने का बेसब्री से इंतज़ार कर रहा था, रात भर सो नहीं पाया। भोर होते ही वह उस आदमी के घर पहुंचा, तय की गई रकम चुकाई और कुएं का मालिक बन गया।लेकिन जैसे ही किसान पानी खींचने के लिए तैयार हुआ, उस आदमी ने उसे फिर से रोक दिया। “रुको! तुमने कुआं भले ही खरीद लिया हो, लेकिन अंदर का पानी अभी भी मेरा है।” दुखी होकर किसान ने राजा अकबर के दरबार में न्याय की गुहार लगाई।
शिकायत सुनकर राजा अकबर ने उस आदमी को बुलाया जिसने कुआं बेचा था। वह आदमी तुरंत आ गया और राजा ने उससे पूछा, “अगर तुमने इस किसान को कुआं बेचा है तो तुम उसे पानी लेने से क्यों रोक रहे हो?”उस आदमी ने जवाब दिया, “महाराज, मैंने उसे कुआं बेचा था, उसके अंदर का पानी नहीं।”राजा अकबर हैरान रह गए। बहुत सोचने के बाद भी जब वे इस मामले को सुलझा नहीं पाए तो उन्होंने अपने सबसे बुद्धिमान सलाहकार बीरबल से मदद मांगी।बीरबल ने दोनों पक्षों की बात ध्यान से सुनी और फिर उस आदमी से कहा, “तो, तुमने कुआँ तो बेच दिया पर पानी नहीं? वह आदमी बड़े उत्साह से बोल, “जी हुजूर” । तब बीरबल ने उसे तुरंत हुक्म दिया”फिर तुम्हारा पानी अभी भी किसान के कुएँ में क्यों है? इसे तुरंत हटाओ!”
अब किसान को एहसास हुआ कि उसकी चालाकी नाकाम हो गई है, तो उसने माफ़ी मांगी और माना कि कुआं और उसके पानी दोनों का मालिकाना हक किसान का है। राजा अकबर, बीरबल की समझदारी से प्रभावित होकर, उस आदमी पर उसके धोखे के लिए जुर्माना लगाया।
कहानी का सार – कभी भी यह मत मानिए कि आप दूसरों से ज़्यादा होशियार हैं। धोखा देना शुरू में फ़ायदेमंद लग सकता है, लेकिन हमेशा कोई न कोई समझदार व्यक्ति होता है जो आपकी बेईमानी को उजागर कर सकता है। अंत में, धोखा देने से सिर्फ़ शर्मिंदगी और सज़ा ही मिलती है-जैसा कि कुआँ बेचने वाले ने सीखा।
